2003 Hutchins Grant Award Recipient Announced

Jul 03, 2003

MINNEAPOLIS, MN... The Surface Mount Technology Association announces the

recipient of the 2003 Charles Hutchins Educational Grant. Andrew Perkins

from Georgia Tech University (Atlanta, GA) has been selected by the SMTA

Grant Committee to receive the award for his project entitled

"Investigating the Combination of High and Low Cycle Fatigue on Solder Joints".

Perkins is a graduate student in the field of mechanical

engineering. Recently his experience has been in material

characterization, numerical modeling, design, and reliability. In his

professional pursuits, Perkins hopes to perform research that will enhance

the reliability of electronic packages, and he hopes to study the

interfacing of microelectronics devices and biomedical applications. He

has been active at local SMTA chapter events, and he plans on continuing

his involvement with professional societies.

Perkins' project was selected from seventeen applications reviewed by SMTA

members and industry educators. The award includes $5,000 (which goes

directly to the student) and travel expenses to SMTA International, during

which Perkins will be presented the award at the SMTA Annual Meeting by

Hutchins Grant Committee chairperson Dr. Laura Turbini of the University of

Toronto.

This grant was established in memory of past SMTA president and industry

colleague Charles Hutchins, who died in May of 1997. For more information

about this grant visit the Hutchins Grant section on smta.org or contact

SMTA executive administrator JoAnn Stromberg at 952-920-7682 or joann@smta.org. http://www.smta.org/hutchins/hutchins.cfm
