IPC/WHMA-A-620 Training and Certification Centers Up and Running

Jun 18, 2003

NORTHBROOK, Ill., June 17, 2003--IPCAssociation Connecting Electronics Industries announces the establishment of its first Training and Certification Center for IPC/WHMA-A-620, Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies. The training certification program, which assures its participants immediate industry recognition, legitimacy and value, is designed to train operators and potential instructors on proper cable and wire harness fabrication and installation.

IPC/WHMA-A-620, supported by 500 full-color illustrations, defines classes of product and includes criteria for target, acceptable, process indicator and defect conditions for crimped, mechanically secured and soldered interconnection and corresponding lacing/restraining.

Modeled after IPCs other worldwide-accepted training programs, the Training and Certification Center for IPC/WHMA-A-620 includes two tiers of instruction. By satisfactorily completing the registered instructor program through training and certification (tier one), participants will be given materials to train and provide certification to their companys application-level personnel, such as operators, inspectors, and management (tier two). Those interested in becoming registered instructors will participate in a one-week program of 32 instructional hours, and those interested in operator proficiency training will participate in a three-day program of 24 instructional hours.

The training courses will cover such topics as:

Cable and wire dimensioning, tolerances and preparation

Crimped terminationsstamped and formed contacts, machined contacts

Insulation displacement connections

Ultrasonic welding

Soldered terminations

Splices

Connectorization

Molding and potting

Marking and labeling

Co-ax and twin-ax assembly

Wire bundle securing

Shielding

Installation

Wire wrap (solderless)

The IPC/WHMA-A-620 training program has been licensed to Tyco Electronics, a major supplier company to the cable and wire harness industry. Recognizing the importance of this standard to the cable and wire harness industry, Tyco Electronics will provide instructor training to their cadre of field representatives worldwide, as well as making both instructor and operator training available to their customers.
