Wire-to-board Range Handles Up To 16A

May 12, 2003

Although no larger than conventional 12A wire-to-board connectors for PCB applications, the latest Combicon HC connectors from Phoenix Contact have a continuous rating of 16A, making them an ideal choice for board designers seeking methods of making connections to high-current circuitry without using larger headers and plugs.

The new connectors, all of which incorporate a novel double-steel contact spring to ensure total reliability when used in high-current applications, are available in wide variety of 5 and 5.08mm pitch versions with between 2 and 12 poles.

All types are suitable for use at up 250V, which means that they are well suited for use in mains-powered equipment.

The Combicon HC range includes headers with straight solder pins, allowing the plug to be inserted at right angles to the PCB, and headers with angled solder pins, which allow the plug to be inserted parallel to the PCB.

Plugs can be supplied with conventional screw terminals, or with vibration-resistant spring-clamp terminals which substantially reduce wiring time.

Spring-clamp types also accept 2mm diameter test pins and 2.3mm diameter test plugs, which simplifies and speeds testing, especially in high-volume production environments.

To ensure that the new high-current versions of its popular Combicon connectors are easy to recognise, each header and plug has HC clearly printed on it in red.

A full range of accessories is available for these innovative connectors, including coding profiles, marking systems, and screwdrivers which are optimally matched to the terminal dimensions.
