The Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA, Minneapolis, MN) has announced that Alan Rae, vice president of technology for Cookson Electronics, has joined the association's Corporate Advisory Council. Rae has been awarded the Savile Shaw Medal by the Society of Chemical Engineering and has been active in the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI, Herndon, VA), as well as the IPC (Northbrook, IL). Rae is also chair of the Optoelectronics TIG and an active participant in the Roadmap.

Rae joins council representatives Dr. Hans-Juergen Albrecht, Sr. principal research scientist at Siemens Berlin; Alec Babiarz, senior vice president, Asymtek; Jim Blankenhorn, president, SMT Plus; Craig Brown, general manager and vice president, DEK; Kim Hyland, director of engineering, Solectron; Jeff Kennedy, director of advanced manufacturing engineering, Manufacturers' Services Ltd.; Irene Lee, executive director, Seagate Singapore; Roger Savage, president, Kester Northrop; Dr. Hari Srihari, Binghamton University Professor and Chris Tanner, senior principal research engineer, Nortel U.K.

The SMTA Corporate Advisory Council is made up of representatives from each sector of the electronics manufacturing industry, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), contract manufacturers, suppliers, designers and academia. The council is dedicated to advising the SMTA board of directors on enhancing members' benefits and is intended to be a focused forum for members' participation in SMTA activities.

The Council will also work to identify current issues, for example, the economic impact of employment changes, acquisitions and consolidation of trade shows; the shift in high-volume manufacturing from North America to Asia; delivering technical content to multi-national members; and assembly tools and industry standardization.
