Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT)
Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) is a three-terminal power semiconductor device, used as an electronic switch. IGBT is a cross between Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) and Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET). It takes the best part of both, the high input impedance and high switching speeds of MOSFET with low saturation voltage of bipolar transistor.
IGBT able to handles large collector-emitter currents with virtually zero gate current drive. IGBT is an output switching and conduction characteristics of bipolar transistor but is voltage controlled like a MOSFET. IGBT are mainly used in power electronics application such as inverters, converters and power supplies, where the demands of the solid-state switching device are not fully met by the power bipolar and power MOSFETs.
Advantage gained by the IGBT over a BJT or MOSFET is that it offers greater power gain than the standard bipolar type transistor combined with the higher voltage operation and lower input losses of MOSFET.
