IPC Works with IT and Computer Industries

Oct 03, 2005

BANNOCKBURN, Ill., October 3, 2005 IPC Association Connecting Electronics Industries has developed an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) critical components committee to begin work on a standardization effort for the information technology and computer industries.

The OEM Critical Components Committee comprised of the following major OEM companies: Dell Inc., IBM, Intel Corporation, Lucent Technologies, Cisco Systems Inc. and others, has identified several key components that have a significant impact on their business. The group is working to standardize quality and manufacturing processes for such products as power supplies, air movement equipment (fans), cables, connectors, heatsinks and components. Currently, such globally accepted quality and manufacturing process standards for many of these critical components do not exist.

Says John Grosso, Director, Supplier Engineering and Quality, Sub-Tier and Critical Commodities at Dell Inc. and Chairman of the IPC Critical Components Standardization Committee, IPC is a perfect match for our efforts as they represent all levels of the electronics supply chain. Because of its long history of standards-setting activities, IPC is the right organization to ensure that the focus of our efforts drives industry quality which in turn, improves customer satisfaction.

The first standardization effort identified by the committee was on air movement devices. A proposed draft of the standard has been developed by the Fan Standardization Subcommittee and is expected to be released early next year. Efforts are also underway to develop standards for the additional product categories.

For more information on the standardization efforts by OEMs and IPC, contact Tony Hilvers, IPCs vice president of industry programs at 847-597-2837 or TonyHilvers@ipc.org.
