Interview with Ken Bliss, CEO & VP Engineering of Bliss Industries, Inc.

Jan 26, 2009

Bliss Industries offers a wide variety of ESD-safe products for industries specializing in lean electronics manufacturing. The company's carts and racks safely store fragile PC boards, SMT feeders, 19" rackmount chassis, fixtures, tooling and inventory. These products protect them from damage and factory abuse with a heavy-duty welded tubular steel frame. For more than 25 years, Bliss has been the leader in SMT cart-based manufacturing systems and full box build handling systems, increasing uptime and throughput.

Q. Bliss Industries has introduced several new products, such as the toteCart. What are some advantages to using this product?

A. The toteCart is our most versatile cart to date. All the rails can be adjusted by simply unbolting the rail and move or remove it. It features four different support rails: a Stop Rail so the tray or tote slides out and stays put, similar to a drawer; an L rail that simply holds the tray or tote; a C rail that keep the tray or tote straight as you pull it out; and a tote rail that allows trays and totes to be used in the cart at the same time. These carts are also available in custom sizes.

Q. Bliss supports all types of manufacturing in virtually all industries. Are there any emerging markets the company plans to enter?

A. We are watching solar panel manufacturing closely; however, we continue to find all markets in all industries very underserved by competitors with carts and handling systems designed specifically to make a process more efficient and lean. We entered box build just three years ago and already are the leading supplier by far with a standard product line and full process engineering support.

Q. Does Bliss Industries plan to sell its equipment in the Mexican market?

A. We have been on a limited basis for a few years. Until recently that market could not see the real value of our products and how much money companies save in the long run with the right cart for the right purpose. We are now much more aggressive in that region.

Q. Would you use direct sales for this or would you use representatives out of the California office?

A. We will support the market with well-trained, in-house direct account managers. We began supporting distribution worldwide just this year, and have not yet found independent representatives to work well for selling our products. We need to support our customers factory-direct. Non-exclusive distributors seem to be working well and we will be putting some in place in Mexico. We are confident we can do an excellent job supporting Mexico from our state-of-the-art California headquarters.

Q. What does Bliss Industries provide the electronics industry that competitors cannot?

A. Our customers tell us they really like our one stop shop and engineering support all in one phone call, as well as over the phone free process engineering support for customers. This has been the weak area of all our competitors. We have more than 24 product lines designed by us. All but four are built in-house. Competitors try to cherry pick our products, but our customers know they do not get a real solution from the competitors they just get a less expensive band-aid approach. In today's highly competitive marketplace for electronics, no company can afford to buy cheap band-aids. They know they need to buy the right high-quality products that truly work and offer a solid return on investment. Only Bliss does this day in and day out.
