ESI Transfers Legacy ("Dynamotion") Mechanical Drilling Service and Parts Business to Excellon

Portland, OR---Electro Scientific Industries Inc. (Nasdaq:ESIO) and Excellon Automation Company, a subsidiary of Esterline Technologies, (NYSE:ESL) announced that ESI is transferring its legacy mechanical drilling service and parts business to Excellon. This includes factory authorized spare parts inventory, field service knowledge, schematics and parts lists necessary for Excellon to support the installed base service requirements of ESI's mechanical drilling systems, including the "Dynamotion" brand.

In July 2002, ESI announced its decision to exit the mechanical drilling business and to focus its efforts and expertise on the faster-growing laser drill market where it is recognized as a market leader.

"This was an easy decision for us to make," said Bob Bell, general manager of Excellon. "We expand our key service offerings and assist ESI's customers at the same time -- ultimately benefiting the entire printed circuit board drilling customer installed base with our capabilities and expertise. This business agreement capitalizes on our core expertise, is logical and rewards all parties involved."

"While we are no longer in the mechanical drilling business, we remain committed to making the right moves for our customers. Transferring service and support to an industry leader like Excellon makes good sense and is mutually beneficial for both companies."
