Oct 8, 2016 | Conformal coating rework jumpers A friend in the contract coating business said: "... ask why the wire is [teflon] coated in the first place, as only the solder joints should be coated in this situation as the flexing/bending of the wires will cause the coating to crack and flake off of the wires. If this were a board that we would be coating, I would only coat the solder joints here."

Mar 2, 2016 | Potting/Conformal Coating Sounds like over molding would be ideal, but if they don't want to spend for a mold I would look at silicone conformal coatings that can be used in a dip process. Silicones are thicker than other coating materials and multiple drippings may provide the desired thickness.

Mar 19, 2013 | Conformal Coating Masking We've used masking tape and peelable (pink) mask to mask our boards before conformal coating for a long, long time. This is a huge time sink, and increases our lead times (particularly because of the cure time for the pink mask). What are other companies doing? We will probably be getting a conformal coating machine in the near future, but we're not expecting it to completely eliminate our need for masking.

Jul 2, 2012 | Ink marking under conformal coating We are having a problem with inspection markings on our boards running when conformal coating is applied We have tried standard permanant markers, and also paint markers, but both run when the coating is applied. There must be someone out there who has solved this problem already. Thanks

Aug 29, 2011 | Conformal Coating Discoloration Greetings...I have a customer that has an assembly that is conformal coated with Humiseal 1A33. This assembly has some components (resistors and FET's) that heated up during operation and has discolored the conformal coating around their location. (Turned the conformal coating a brownish color ). Per IPC-A-610, discoloration of conformal coating is a Defect Class 1,2,3. However, this discoloration is NOT a result of the conformal coating process or the conformal coating itself but rather from the heat given off by the components on the board. Does this discoloration pose a reliability

Nov 24, 2009 | Bubbles on solder joint(after conformal coating curing) Hi Davef, Thanks...Saw 1 of your thread that you posted : Thanks for providing... From davef : There are many possibilities: * Conformal coat is incompatible with surface residue on the board * Conformal coat is incompatible with solder mask on the board * Moisture is out-gassing from the board * Conformal coat is too thick and does not allow the gaseous products to get out [your operator's theory] * Thinner is evaporating too quickly to allow the bubbles to escape * Coating is being cured at too high of a temperature that causes the surface of the coating to skin over and trap the volatiles inside
Nov 22, 2009 | Bubbles on solder joint(after conformal coating curing) Hi Davef, The bubbles occurs at the body also...there's also a washing process before the conformal coating:-the Flux residue are removed after washing. ... The curing profile is also something that we are looking into during the initial troubleshooting, but even we eliminate the Oven curing ,by using environment curing, the bubbles still exist... What chemicals have you been dealing with on the conformal coating ?
Oct 9, 2009 | Bubbles in conformal coat We use Dow 2620 silicone conformal coat applied with PVA1000 sprayer machine. If used on a daily bases, we have no problem. If we let the machine sit idle for over a week, we will get bubbles in the conformal coating. Sometimes, purging the line will not resolve the issue. We have found out that if the coating tank is in full pressure during the idle days, air will get into the bag. To resolve the issue, we will close all valves going in and out of the coating tank and then release all the air pressure to the tank. This has been our process for the past 6 months and we have had no air bubbles

Aug 27, 2009 | Bubbles in conformal coat I am having trouble with little air bubbles in my conformal coat. It ranges from a few pin sized bubble to looking like spit. We are using Dow 2620 silicone conformal coat applied with a PVA sprayer machine. The conformal coat comes in bladder bags that are placed in the pressure tank. When I bleed the lines the conformal coat looks non-bubbly and then bubbles start forming. One of my operators suggested adding some thinner to the CC in the bladder bag, on the theory that the stuff is so thick that moving it somehow induces bubbles. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

May 29, 2009 | ESD considerations during Conformal Coating? I too have heard of the ESD problem when using aerosol spray conformal coating, but I haven't found any documentation. I have been spraying SR conformal coating for ~ 10,000 boards with no failures due to the coating. The person spraying is grounded and the boards are placed on aluminum foil, which is replaced to prevent coating build-up. This probably isn't best, but so far it has worked for me.

Apr 7, 2009 | Conformal Coat peeling Most of the conformal coating manufacturers recommend verifying the compatibility of their coating with the solder mask, so it's no surprise that occassionally there will be such issues. Are you sure your conformal coat is completely cured? If your subjecting your boards to HASS exposures prior to the full cure - and that can be as long as 7 days for some conformal coatings - you will cause delamination because the coating has not yet acheived it's full adhesion strength to the mask. This would be particularly evident in situations where the coated surface is characterized by low surface energy. I

Jun 5, 2008 | Curing Conformal Coating Hi, I've been looking into UV cureable conformal coating and the UV ovens but a chemist I know is very negative about this. He suggest by heating standard conformal coating to 90deg for a couple of minutes will make the product good enough to handle/pack(all what UV curing does). He also thinks UV conformal coating is unstale (must store it at a particular temperature, has limited shelf life, will probably go off before we use it all) I am in Australia, so we'll have to import it in 40lb drums from loctite @ $2.5k each. What I don't get is; UV conformal coating is more expensive, UV curing oven, i

Jul 23, 2007 | Conformal Coat Thickness We know nothing of DeFelsko, but do understand how they distinguish between the solder mask and the conformal coat. DeFelsko manufactures hand-held, non-destructive coating thickness gages that are ideal for measuring the dry film thickness of conformal coatings on appropriate PCB. * Posi Tector 6000 Eddy-current gages are ideal for measuring conformal coating thickness on printed circuit boards with copper ground planes. * PosiTector 200 gages are ideal for measuring the conformal coating thickness applied to printed circuit boards without a copper ground plane.
