One reason for high maintenance costs is that wind turbines are typically in remote locations, increasingly in the sea, with the nacelle 100 meters or more above ground level. When a drivetrain fails, the required maintenance planning and practices are much different than those needed to maintain generating assets at a typical onshore production utility such as a coal-fired power plant.
