The positioner is designed to operate a valve actuator to maintain the valve in a position determined by the control instrument. 
The positioner is direct acting, i.e., with an increase in instrument pressure, the valve pressure (positioner output) will increase. Because the output is connected to the bottom of the actuator, the valve stem will, in all cases, move toward the positioner when instrument pressure (positioner input) increases
