Supervision with ABB SACE circuit-breakers In the field of energy distribution, communication and dialogue between protection devices are made possible by the microprocessor-based trip units equipped with the Modbus communication interface. The use of these trip-units allows ABB SACE circuitbreakers to: - exchange data with other electronic devices through a communication bus and to interact with the supervision systems for the computer-based management of low voltage electrical installations - integrate the management of the electrical distribution plant with the automation systems of a whole factory or industrial process; for instance, integrate the information (currents, voltages and powers) coming from the circuit-breakers which protect the motors, the auxiliary circuits and the supply line of the electrical furnaces of a steelworks with the information and the data relevant to the physical quantities (e.g. pressure and temperature) involved in the management of the whole process. In this way, the circuit-breaker equipped with Modbus interface, besides carrying out the classic function of protecting the plant against overcurrents and deliver energy to the loads, also takes the function of field device of the supervision system functioning both as transmitter7 as well as actuator. The use as a transmitter makes it possible to keep under control the electrical energy consumption and to improve the management of the electrical distribution plant.
