We came across a manufacturer selling us a part that they Classed as RoHS compliant. On further investigations the part was found to contain lead, we use an XRF. The content was over 85% so was exempt and therfor compliant(HMP solder), until we soldered to it. Then the HMP high lead solder amalgamaited with the SAC paste we we using to form a new alloy with less than 85% lead and made the joint non RoHS compliant. So as well as checking components as they are recived are you checking your products after they have been reflowed?

what part was this? was the high temp solder on the first level interconnect? why is the high lead solder being soldered with a SAC alloy?

the part is a pi filter device, originally the supplier was nanufacturing it with HMP by dipping it, the giving it a Sn62 over dip to maintain solderability, to supply a RoHS compliant product they just left off the Sn62. so yes on compliant part the first level of connection is tto the HMP.
