Just seen the new Siplace X platform with new "20 segment collect & place head". Am I getting old & confused or is this just a turret by another name?

it's a collect and place as the head is fitted onto a moving gantry, therefore it collects all the parts and moves to the placement position and places them.

thats my understanding of it anyway.

Surely the next stage would be to anchor the head & pick & place at the same time cutting out the time lost in movement, then add rotating nozzle windmills to speed up nozzle selection....

I'm just remembering all the nasty things reps said in the past about turrets & rotary heads whilst they were pushing their inline nozzle X/Y heads. Now it seems to be going full circle with Universal & Siemens using a derivitive of the turret.

Cheers,

Rob.

There is quite some difference with a fixed head versus a head mounted to a X/Y gantry. If the head can move, feeder tables and board are fixed. If the head is fixed, feeder tables and board have to move. Spinning a component around on a vacuum nozzle is not the challenge, but keeping a maxi melf on a board, while moving the board quickly in both direction is quite a problem. The rotary head, compared to multiple heads side by side came out of the requirement to deliver the components to a camera station, during the time a component is picked or placed.

They both have good and bad points, depending on part size and such. The speed of the turret is great but the large part size capability and co-planarity check some of the X-Y machines is a life saver. I'm surprised no one has come up with a combonation machine. Now there's an idea!
