the company i work for is going into circuit boards and want to find a used wave solder machine theyre budget is 10 to 20 k i have never run one of these machines and dont no what to look for anybody out there have recommendations of what i need in an entry level machine of this cost any and all help is apprciatied

Fred, give us a quickie at what you will be soldering Single sided thu hole, double sided SMT, both, lead pitches and protrusions, Flux type, and such. Buying a used wave can be tricky and the more info up front the better we will be able to tell you what you need and how to qulify a used wave.

Also concider if you will be going lead free in the future as conversion can be a added expense. You may think about learning and going lead free from the begnining as the indestry is rapidly moving in this direction.

Key Issue: Will this machine solder your boards? You never know until you solder one. Any other avenues of analysis involve substantial risk.

Flux Selection * High or low solids * VOC or VOC-free

Solder Alloy * If using lead-free, avoid stainless steel or uncoated cast iron.

Conveyor * Is the conveyor wide enough for your product? * Do you think you�ll be able to find replacement fingers?

Fluxing Operation * Can the fluxer support the flux selection? * Spray fluxer should provide a thin coating of flux over the complete board with evidence that the flux has just entered the plated-through-holes. * Foam fluxers, flux head should be stable and generate the smallest bubbles possible, when adjustments have been made to the air pressure. * Is an air knife available to remove excess flux from the base of the board? [In the case of spray fluxing, the air knife helps flux rise into the plated-through-holes.]

Pre Heat Operation * Given the flux selection, can the temperature on the topside of the board reach the flux supplier�s recommended level prior to passing over the solder bath? [A minimum of 120*C?]

Wave Selection * If running bottom-side SMT, is there a chip wave, in addition to the laminar wave? * If using lead-free, can the pot reach sufficient temperature? * Is nitrogen inerting necessary / available?

Thx to everyone who replied. we will be running single sided thru hole and double sided smt, 186 rosin flux cause they tell me it can take the heat needed for 18 layer pwbs. some long leads. also they are ordering in pallets to deal with the irregular shped pwbs, so need teeth to carry them. what is best, spay or stone for a fluxor, will it make a difference with the 186 rosin flux?

I would use a foam fluxer since spraying rosin will make the stickiest nastiest mess you can imagine. 18 layer board huh? You will want convection preheat, both top and bottom preheaters, preheat tunnel of at least 4-5', a chip wave, laminar flow wave, possibly a surface tension breaker in the wave like electroverts omega for example, exit cooling since these babies are going to be hot and hold the heat for awhile.

When checking out a used wave make sure that all heating elements both in preheat and solder pot are functional, ensure that all baffles and dross gates are present, wave flow is good at deeper solder depths since fixtures usually require the nozzle to be positioned relatively far away from the conveyor. Also check motor conditions, conveyor chain and fingers for cleanliness and overall condition, Verify the availablity of both service and spare parts.
