Welcome Bob,

HASL stands for "Hot Air Solder Level" and is the final finish the raw boards guys place on the solder pads on the PCB. There are two popular raw board finishes, HASL which is a solder finish and NiAu which is Nickle Gold, and is a Gold finish. Both finishes can be good, although NiAu is more consistantly smooth.

Hi Bob, welcome Let's take this a little further. You'll also see HASL referred to as HAL and gold referred to as ENIG (electroless nickle, immersion gold. Other common surface finishes for preserving solderability include OSP(organic suface protectant), white tin and silver. These all (except HASL) feature a flat surface. All have been thoroughly discussed in this forum and are available in the archives. Also, buy yourself a good book or two. See Dave F's capsule reviews of the most important ones in the archives from a few months ago. John Thorup
