Automatic Inspection Equipment | 12 July, 2000

We are a medium sized Contract manufacturing house operating under High mix High Volume conditions. We are planning to buy an Automatic inspection equipment for Post reflow inspection. One apprehension is that I have not seen these systems being used much in Taiwan or China. Are they really worth the investment. Can somebody suggest me some of the good ones.

Thanks & Regards Vinesh Gandhi

Re: Automatic Inspection Equipment | 12 July, 2000

There are two kinds of automatic inspection equipment was used in our company in China. One is MVT GS-1 another one is VI2000. We put it in line before reflow oven for quality control. It's very useful and average 1-2 DPHU reduction compare with non inspection equipment line.

Hope it's help

Re: Automatic Inspection Equipment | 17 July, 2000

I think you could look at the phenomena in two dimensions. Many of the sub-contractors in Asia are focus on low price-less demanding products. They hire operators to visually inspect the boards and sometime there is no inspection at all. On one hand, these products use medium size components (which allow inspection by operators). On the other hand, they are normally not high value products (the labour rate in Asia is still low enough to justify inspection by operators). I think AOI will be useful only if you were able to control your process. What I meant is that AOI could tell you which parts of process has gone wrong (by SPC on all the error found in the board). From this information, you could go back to adjust your P&P machines, printers, etc.

IS MVT still around? They stopped servicing their equipment in some locations and their North American manager recently quit.

Paul:

MVT is certainly still around and continues to dominate the worldwide AOI market. Frankly, the charge that this company has "stopped servicing their equipment", is libelous. The fact that you're employed by an MVT competitor, MVP, should have been made clear in this disinformational message. I was the "North American manager" that you referenced. I indeed resigned to take a position with a major player in the SMT assembly market. However, MVT remains a top player in the AOI business and will continue to do so in my absense.

MVT has never been in as strong position as they are today. Over the past two weeks alone, MVT has opened two new offices in Mexico and Singapore, launched new products and closed more sales than any other previous period. MVT's AOI solutions are rapidly becoming the preferred choice amongst the leading OEM's and EMS coporations globally as MVT offer a complete portfolio of pre and post reflow solutions and provide superior localised support around the world.

Congratulations on your new position, Mike. I formally retract my former statement. I was misinformed and apologize for any misinterpretation.

Mike, with all due respect, the customer service that MVT provides is poor at best...more accurately non existent. Our company has had more correspondence with their anwering service than any living breathing personell. The GS-1 has some inherent flaws that MVT will not give us any relief on.I.E., plx generator, conveyor system, GUI,etc. Very frustrated.

Dear Debandrick:

Since you are obviously a customer, your experience is highly relevant.

I'd be surprised if MVT has not contacted you by now to correct this situation.

A.O.I. machine in use by my company is made by Cyberoptics and is called a Kestra. It inspsects boards prior to the reflow oven and highligts missing parts,mis-placed parts, wrong parts( by looking at any text on the device that you define, or by orientation). It actually does improve first-time pass rates

Further to your very interesting comments (keihodgson)would it be possible to discuss this further as it is a subject that I am very interested in and feel that my job will be more fulfilling if I knew more about this machine.

Dear Zhang JianJun My company just bought in two MVT GS-1 by auction. Unfortunately, there is no technical manual or reference document. I appreciate your help to make a copy of manual for me. Please let me know the cost of them.

Thank you very much in advance and looking forward to your reply very soon. Best regards, Narong./Thailand

MVT? When you feel your program is complete run a bare board through the system and please post the results of the inspection.

DEAR FRIENDS. I APPRECIATE THE SANJEEVS COMMENT . LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE WENT IN SEARCH OF MVT RATHER FOCUSSING ON ABOUT THE AOI. ANY WAY....

I to some extent agree with Alex on the asia scene where the subcontractiung process is very cost competative but in order to be in business and continue to flourish and be acceptable to morenumber of corporates who outsouce going in for aoi is a must. but EOL (END OF LINE ) may not be really productie as false failures and added to rework cost may be very high hence prereflow may be best suggested provided the reflow you have is one of the best in the world.

Hi! I just wanted to shortly share my experience with AOI machines. We have a VisionPoint from Diagnosys (Same software as in the Photon dynamics machines) and the machine is doing its job really good actually...BUT! The machine building quality is rahter low. Nuts n bolts are not tensioned correctly, and the cable crimping was really bad wich caused a number of strange behaviours of the machine. And the software sometimes just crasch while inspecting the board. But back to the AOI process itself:

The machine eliminates our P&P and reflow problems really smoothly. if our P&P is not correctly calibrated I can quickly shout STOP!! We correct the problem and keep on running. That saves big cash. Fact is that it also gives us an inner calm if we just are mounting the boards, and our customer is testing them. Because we dont want to se those bad bad test reports our customer will send us if we didnt have our AOI. So we like the AOI process big time! Have a nice weekend lads! //MattiasW
