Height paste measurement

We are interested on measuring height paste as a control method in our production lines, We are considering using a Cyberoptics equipment but we perform a GR&R for this equipment and it didn't pass it. Do you know a better alternative to measure height paste? How do you determine Specs limits? And control limits? I have heard that is better to measure volume. What do you think about this?

Did you use the frame grabber software that is available for the LSM? I used one in the past and we also failed the GR&R we then installed this software and it became very consistant unfortubately I cannot remember who sells this software. Anyway, paste volume measurement is much better since it is volume that matters and not height alone.

Like other things, the more you pay, the better the gage.

I'm not sure which Cyberoptics unit you're considering, but LSM has a lousy gage [R&R ~25%]. We use a microscope with lousy gage that costs waaay less than some laser guided thing. Search the fine SMTnet Archive for previous discussions along this line of thought and microscope references and contacts.

Russ maybe talking about ASC [ http://www.ascinternational.com/ ]. They can wack the gage on a LSM by about 2/3. That gets it into a range that it's no longer like throwing mud at the wall.

Juan,

I believe in term of height vs volume, volume is much better control. By the way we used Cyber Sentry 2000 which allows us to measure volume, height and area. My plant normal practice is measuring the height.

Last time I did the control limit was by crunching a whole month of data and calculate auto calculate it. This will allows all the process issue, "allowable" noise to be calculated in. I would consider that because we need to again see how critical our paste height/volume is to the end product.

THe las GR&R done for our measuring equipment was in the good only..maybe needed a technical PM.

Spec usually decided by the FA run and evaluting on result via the solder defects.

Ok Guys, I really appreciate your answers. we are using the LSM 300, so I'm going to check about the software you mention in order to check if this could help.If you have any other idea, please let me know.

Its nearly impossibile to get any Gage R&R on systems that require the operator to posisition the board to be measured. For this you need an automatic measurement system. There are many vendors out there in addition to CyberOptics, models SE 200 and SE 300.
