Placement machine component management | 1 April, 1998

Hello, We are currently trying to design and ultimately implement a system that will be able to count and manage component placement for three Sanyo chipshooters on three SMT lines. As the number of components decreases in the reels we want to be able to flag stores and be sure of back up inventory. This system will help us cut out alot of downtime that is currently spent on retrieving reels from stores. We want to design a system, whereby the operator will be notified by the placement machine when the reel falls below a set level. Stores must also be notified so as to have a ready stock of reels. Does anybody have suggestions in this area? Do ye have any idea if such a stsyem is available? Thx, Niall Hayes

The equipment utilizes an MIS system--it's already built into your software. It tracks the number of picks, number of placements, and number of re-picks (or it should, if you have equipment purchased within the last 10 years). So, the issue is to tie in a "material setup" by feeder to a decrementing component counter, or to a CIM system "move-in, move-out" timestamp. Depends on how automated you are, and whether or not you have a GOOD integrated CIM system. In other words, if when you do a reel replenishment, you scan a barcode on a reel which tells you that reel X contains 15,000 0402 100 K 5% resistors. Now you have a count assigned to a feeder....... The machine also does "move-in and move-out counts, and either your equipment or CIM system can be tied to the number of components used per board........you now have a good tool to red flag the nearing end of the reel. (BTW, you can do a feeder slot verification at this time, as a sanity check for setup--i.e. this feeder should go in slot 86). Key issue, here: your IS folks have to understand the machine languages, and be able to talk to them---not always an easy task. I'm fortunate here.... My IT organization is HOT! We not only talk to our equipment, but automatically download the proper program for the cued model type on the input side of the equipment. As a result, There effectively is no operator intervention of program setups, and we can truly run Lot qty's of ONE! My customers LOVE my ability to run low quantity protos across the identical processes as the eventual production. Now, if you purchase a tape splicing kit (available from Siemens, I know for sure), you can "reload on the fly"......unless you have a monster with moving carriages and interlock envelopes, which I suspect you do. I'd not recommend walking behind a moving carriage machine for reel replenishments on the fly, unless you have a split carriage, selectively turned on or off...... If you'd like to chat about your project, please feel free to contact me at 850-580-0282. Scott Cook Mgr, Comm. Business Dev. Talla-Com Industries

It can be closed loop to prevent part errors and has a counter that links with the machines MIS. Remenber those reels are +/- 10% in volume. I will email you the company info when I am back at my office. Also think about bulk feeding. Within the next 2 to 3 years 40% of all passives sold will be bulk fed. The price difference is currently 10% but expect that to clime to 25 to 30%.
