SECS/GEM

Would anybody like to share experiences with adding and using the SECS/GEM interface on a multi-vendor line(DEK,FUJI,PANASONIC, UNIVERSAL,BTU)???

As an equipment vendor (Panasonic Create group)I am extremely interested in GEM/SECS. It is really a nebulous concept. Everyone I talk to wants something different but it's all lumped under GEM/SECS! I ask a simple question. What do you want it to do? The answer I get is "This" and a 40 pound document is thrown in front of me. Personaly, I think the thing is out of control(To many cooks, if you know what I mean) As a manufacture I ask you, in simple terms, What would you like us to provide? All machines are capable of providing their process parameters. If you had access to this data via a network you could manipulate the data you choose as you wish, is this adequate? What I am hoping to eventually get out of the SECS/GEM interface is an easy way(??) to connect new machines to a data storage/gathering system and subsequently analyze process and product data. Eventually I hope to be able to display selected process/product information on a web page.

Nancy, Panasonic's CIM software product, PanaPRO, provides Line Management Functionality for a Multi-Vendor line. This product currently supports Universal, Fuji's and MPM's. It communicates with Universal's and MPM's via SECSII-GEM protocol.

Nancy, I am a sales engineer for UniCam Software. UniCam has a new software tool called "Production Monitor", it connects to SMT equipment, monitors, collects and analyzes machine data. I still don't quite understand how to use this interface. Can someone explain it? Will someone explain it? I have a multi-vendor line with a DEK 265, Philips P&P, and Electrovert reflow. How can this help me? Or can it? We have such problems monitoring what's going on with the equipment. We have plenty of Lotus Notes databases for operators to record information (part of our ISO 9002 process) but they either won't do it or won't do it acurately. Wave/wash (Electrovert equip) is the worst area. Que voulez vous?

GEM (Generic Equipment Model) and SECS (Semiconductor Equipment Communications Standard)were developed to provide an standard communications protocal for equipment of different manufacturers. However, although the machines connected through GEM "talk the same language", they do not know "what to talk about" unless they are connected to a host system (for lack of a better term). The software in these host systems are developed to utilize GEM/SECS in a manner that is typically unique to the user (i.e. production environment and needs). Unless your company has expertise in this field, it makes sense to go to a vendor that specializes in GEM host development. A good one is GW Associates in California (internet: gwa.com). But there are many others. GEM is growing in importance. Recently, NEMI (National Electronics Manufacturers Initiative) voted GEM/SECS as the pathway for the future of "plug and play" SMT equipment.
