What do you want to know about Trade Shows and Conferences?

To All,

SMTnet has many new services and content planned for 1999. We welcome any input that you may have for ideas that would make your SMTnet experience better.

One project in the works is to greatly expand our coverage of Trade Shows and Conferences. SMTnet wants to be your one stop for show and conference information. We want to list all shows and conferences worldwide that have to do with electronics manufacturing in our calendar. Each show listed will include a minimum amount of information in the listing page, with additional link(s) to its own web site.

We would appreciate letting us know the following:

1. Which are the shows you have interest in, either as an attendee or as an exhibitor; 2. As a potential attendee, what do you need to know about each show? This includes information about the show itself and the city it is in, transportation, hotels, etc. 3. As a potential exhibitor, what do you need to know about each show? This includes information about the show itself and the city it is in, transportation, hotels, etc. 4. Would you be interested in viewing a live session of a conference or a live Show booth via the Internet?

The first thing I would like is for Reed's Nepcon pages to be faster. I guess you can't do anything about that, however, so...

There is always a ton of information about the big shows available. Our snail mail gets deluged when there's a Nepcon coming up. What could be more helpful is info on the smaller, more local shows that don't have giant advertising budgets. Like the SMTA tabletop shows that go around the country. Or the seminars that vendors put on locally where you can go learn a lot on a small budget (like Multicore's in PA and NY this month).

Other helpful items would be a listing of the courses directly applicable to our industry - assembly. The conference programs are chock full of stuff on test, future trends, EMS, board fab, which I guess is related to us but does not directly apply. When I pick up a program to look for Jennie Hwang's reliability course, it takes me half an hour to find it, only to discover schedule conflicts. It sure would be nice to have an assembly-specific listing of courses and tech sessions.

As for travel information, hotels and transportation would be very welcome. And, as with any travel, local weather info, or a link to it, would also be welcome.

A live session might be a good thing to view. A computer set up in a kiosk somewhere at the show that is dedicated to the SMTnet would be great. I am so busy out at Nepcon West that I never bother to bring my notebook, because I just don't have time to dial in. I can live without my email for a week, but I'm kind of addicted to the SMTnet. Living without that might be more difficult.

Finally (and pardon my longwindedness) perhaps you could set up a page or area where the vendors can highlight their latest and greatest that they will reveal at the show. Almost every big company hypes their newest machine, or formulation, gadget at the larger shows. Setting up an area for them allows more people to see it (even if they are not atttending), gives them something to make sure they do go see (if they are attending), and could generate revenue to support this wonderful web site.

I agree with Chrys. I want more information on the local seminars. My company does not send me to the big shows, but I can go to local seminars. The seminars are usually put on by the big companies, and if I am not on their mailing list I miss the information.
