Orientation of DIP IC's for Wave soldering | 11 January, 1999

Netters,

Someone tell me which of these two is correct for wave soldering

1. Direction thru wave -------------------->

_|__|__|__|__|_ | | | | |_ __ __ __ __ _ | | | | |

2. Direction thru Wave ----------------------->

______ __| |__ __| |__ __| |__ __| |__ |______|

Thanks,

Method 1 is best, i.e. only two leads (one from each side) hitting the wave at the same time. Think of the IC as a rake. If all the leads on one side of the IC hit the wave at the same time, the IC is effectively acting like a rake. Solder will more likely be retained between the leads thus creating bridges.

The major axis of the DIP should be perpendicular to the wave. TTYL Dave F
