Straddle mount connector

Do you have experience with reflow process of a straddle mount connector on a 1.6 mm PCB ? Connector have more than 200 pins

Ron,

We use 100 pin straddle mount connectors on some of our 1.6mm boards (up to eight per board.) They come to us from the vendor with a bead of solder on the somewhat 'J' shaped leads. Our process is as follows:

Mount connector to board with hardware after all surface mount components have been placed and soldered. Operator applies liquid flux to connector leads (solder bead) and lands. Board is placed on the x-y table under the nozzle of an Air-Vac hot air reflow station. As the solder reflows, the board is moved under the nozzle until all leads are soldered. No additional solder is needed, the bead has sufficient volume to make good fillets.

This has worked very well for us. Hot bar soldering was not an option because of the shape of the leads and the fact that the leads are staggered. The pitch of the leads made hand soldering very difficult in addition to time consuming. The connectors could not be put on at time of surface mount assembly because they are mounted around several edges of the board and would interfere with the conveyor. Since these are not high volume boards for us the decision was made to go with the secondary operation I described.

For connectors that have pre-applied solder such as described by Bob and the lead looks like --v, I follow a similar process except I run them through the oven. If there's no solder on the pins then I print solder bumps on the board first then follow the same process. If the connector has flush mounting pins I use the Pace miniwave tip to hand solder them.

That's great but how do you take them off? This is the problem I am trying to solve?
