Hoping someone can help me out with this.

I have a 2003 model 1707EXL oven which has been working great. Last week the hard drive on the old PC quit completely. The PC was running wind0ows XP. I do have the original cd with the Heller software, but putting together a newer PC that can run XP is impossible.

Is there compatible software that works in a newer OS? I put together a machine with windows 10 and installed windows XP using virtual box. I can't seem to get that to work either. the software constantly says "the system cannot find the file specified".

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks Rick

We always image the hdd on any machine in case this happens. Then you just need to buy an hdd and write the image back.

If you just need a new hdd I would look on ebay for the part number or a compatible alternate. You can even find new old stock a lot of times. Replace the drive and reinstall windows xp. You can still download the original images to write a cd from archive.org.

Had a PC issue last year and had to replace it. I went to a local Good Will store and purchased an older desktop with serial ports. Had to purchased the oven software from Heller (around $70). I formatted the PC with Windows XP. When installing the oven operating system the is a procedure you must follow. When the software is installed Com 1 in you device manager has to say "oven board" or you will not communicate with the oven. You should be able to ask Heller for the installation documentation to reinstall the Heller XP software. - Hope this Helps

You might consider buying a machine on eBay. I found a replacement the other day that came with xp. I think where it gets tricky is if you have the winkic software installed, as it is 16 bit software and seems to break on newer xp versions. There may be a workaround though.

How do you know it's the hard drive? Have you tried ddrescue, or the freezer trick?

It sounds like the hard drive is the issue, and not the rest of the PC. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a copy of XP. Just install a new HDD and load XP. I might even have one. Is the Hard Drive IDE or SATA?
