Width control on Universal Genesis (PWC) issue | 6 September, 2022

I've got two Genesis machines (GC30 and GX11) that I bought used. The PWC on one is disabled, and if I enable that axis the machine will tell me it can't find or initialise that axis. I tried swapping the board 48904905 from the working machine to the other and nothing changed. I'm unsure what to try next. Any ideas?

Poly, I've seen the same error occur with our GI-14 when the glass scale encoder is simply dirty. If you bought the machines used, they could have been stored in fairly dirty environment. Just clean the glass scale. (use caution). We use lint free cloth with a light touch of IPA and swipe from one side to the other. One swipe only. We don't scrub or rub vigorous in any manner.

That machine seems sensitive to the encoder being dirty.

Good luck.

This may sound silly but... I'm not sure where the glass scale is for the width axis. There is a Heidenhain rod 1020 rotary encoder connected to the motor that moves the width control, but I can't see any linear encoder / scale. I've given everything I could find a clean but the width control was disabled by the previous owner. The seller didn't mention that until I got the unit...

Does motor start to move during zeroing at all?

I'll double check tomorrow but I don't think so, it fails zeroing straight away (without moving the other parts) when the PWC axis is enabled, which is why I tried swapping the board as I assumed it was a controller not being found issue.

It can also be a faulty servo controller (not the amplifier), I think it's UMC3 board in slot 10

oh great, I'll check that out, can I just swap that between the two machines to check? Is that module on the front of the machine or on the back with the VRM modules? I'm pretty new to finding stuff on the machines!

You can swap the board between machines, it's located on the front, down right (VME rack), where all "smart" stuff is locaated.

Poly,

Yes. I took a tangent on you. When I read your initial post I was thinking axis err. Still good points for the Genesis but won't help your current problem. :)
