COPPER THICKNESS IN PTH BARREL HOLE | 7 January, 2022

Hi Everyone, I want to understand what is the copper thickness to be maintained in PTH Barrel hole. Is this same as Fab recommendation of surface finished copper thickness like 25/35/70 microns..??? Is there any specific IPC standards available to understand barrel copper thickness.?? Intersted to know your valuable reply soon.

YES there is an IPC target/acceptable spec In general terms the barrel thickness in the hole should be 1 mil (thou). IPC has an allowable limit lower around .75 with some other factors. I have been checking barrel plating on all incoming boards since about 2008 when I got burned by an offshore PCB fab, 20% fallout of an assembly in test. Cross section showed poor plating in the barrel and I was stuck with $25K in un-usable product, oh the board shop said they'd give us replacement boards - ah sorry that doesn't help..... As you can see I am a little raw - get yourself an oxford CM5000 eddy current gauge - expensive but effective to nondestructively detect poor plating and subsequent failures.
