PCBA was swollen after SMD | 11 August, 2021

Hi all, The PCBA was swollen after SMD It is hard PCBA with 6 layers and SMD both sides Defect rate: ~ 5% Phenomenon: swell at the same side, same position (at 2 IC positions). Did not find any abnormality in SMD process as well as storage condition. The humidity card is good condition and the storage time is only 2 months. I got some advice that all PCBs with 6 layers must be baked before inputting SMD without care how long storage. SMD 2nd side must be finished within 24 hours after finishing SMD 1st side. These conditions will help to reduce the swell situation. Please kindly advise.

Most likely you have a bad batch of PCBs. This seems like a lamination defect. Most likely, there was some contamination that prevented layers from adhering. You can cut one of the boards at the defect side and inspect the cross-section.

Agree on a pcb manufacturing defect. Contact the supplier of the PCBs for guidance. They have to review the issue for a proper resolution. Is it from offshore? Can suggest some solid pcb suppliers in Asia if there is an interest.

You've probably got a really bad set of PCBs.

We have seen a larger amount of boards lately get rejected internally.

I would switch PCB shops. Unless your oven profile is out of spec, consider a different PCB supplier.

We have sourced very high volumes of PCBs (4L-6L) from offshore and can recommend a list of quality shops.

Shops that we can recommend are:

Suntak PCB (Shenzhen) - they do not work directly unless you have very high annual volumes so you will need to work through an approved agent.

For the agent contact:

Terry Guan | Sales Department SHENZHEN YAXINDA TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD Factory Address: No.6-3-3, Central Industrial Zone, Central Village, Huicheng District, Huizhou. Tel:+86 13145861850 | Website: http://www.yaxindatech.com| Email: pcb023@yaxindatech.com Can suggest more on demand.

Do you use via-in-pad for your PCB designs? If yes, then other shops must be considered. Can share more details. Some will charge a premium for the via-in-pad (HDI) PCB layout designs while some will consider it the normal process for their factory.

if you want to source from the #1 PCB shop in China, then there is Shennan Circuits. Again, unless you have very high annual volumes, they will not deal direct.

Shennan builds PCBs for the military, medical and other high profile accounts. We used them to support HP / Dell for our OEM builds with Halogen Free laminates when others did not understand our specs. Shennan builds very high grade PCBs but you will pay a premium.

Their agent:

Your boss didn't think so? What was his/ her theory? Was this resolved?

Forgot to ask earlier - what is the TG rating for your laminate? If not selected already, use a high TG rating like TG155 or TG170 laminates for the ROHS temps. Never saw swollen PCBAs with such rated PCBs to date.

Was this problem solved? What did your boss do to come up with a solution? Have you contacted the PCB supplier? Ask them to have a review on this and give a proper solution. Consider changing your PCB supplier. You got the bad set of PCBs that may be due to the lamination defect. Compare the PCB manufacturing teams you know or your near locality and choose the supplier who has a good electronics manufacturing team with the latest machinery and technologies.
