Hi ,

I can't find any soldering forums other than this and need help,hopefully someone can chime in .

I have a Y- board that doesn't work, I can't find any blown/swollen fuse caps,but I have something else.

When I zoom in it looks like the soldering has broken and wondering if this can be soldered . I don't want to bring it in for repair and have to pay a consultation fee if it isn't repairable.

Here's a pic,please tell me if you see the soldering break too.

This is a perfectly appropriate question for this forum.

Looking at the pics, the solder joints look fine to me. can you circle the questionable joint? Maybe I'm just not seeing it.

In general its fine to reflow a questionable solder joint to trouble shoot a problem.

I still don't see the defect, but in general, yes you can use an iron to reflow and cracked or suspect joint. You may want to add a little flux before you apply the iron.

Yes I've been watching some videos and will be using flux as you suggested.

Almost all of the legs appear to have a jumper wire twisted over the leg. It's particularly obvious in the later close-up image. Were the jumpers added during a repair process or was that part of the original design?

No they weren't added, never been serviced.

The top legs don't have that hard wire exposed,just the bottom 2.

It seems when the connection broke {bad solder failed from TV being turned on and off going from heat to cold ?} them jumper wires appeared. They are actually not wires,they're hard wires .

It seems they were inside the original legs going into the transformer and were exposed after the failure ,maybe?

Is this a DYI appliance repair? is their a part marking on the xformer? It might be better to replace the whole part.

That's a good point, although hand soldering a xfmr on a RoHS assembly isn't going to be a walk in the park.

My other question would be did it fail because it got hot, or did it get hot because it failed?

I have a magnifying glass coming in addition to solder kit. Hopefully it will make the job a little easier, if i screw up I have a part on order.

Do you see what I'm talking about in the pictures I posted ?

It just looks like a transformer, as had been mentioned earlier, but w/o a part number (usually the parts are marked with some ID code) it's hard to know for sure.

If that's the case and what we're seeing is one of the leads for the windings that came off it would definitely quit working.

Print is so small ,can't read it,bunch of numbers/letters. Don't see any numbers/letters on the part itself,just around it.

When I get the magnifying glass I'll get the part number and look it up to see exactly what it is.
