Dear colleagues.

Share your experience, please. Printed circuit boards with which finish surface do you prefer to mount? Which finish surface in your experience is preferable and why.

We prefer Flat finish. We don't like HASL.

We use ENIG whenever possible, to the extent that we will try to talk customers out of Pb-free HASL until our keyboard punching fingers bleed.

It's much more solderable than HASL and it's flat.

I've never tried OSP so can't speak to it's real world use.

I only know what I've read about it (it has a shelf life and allegedly is less physically durable than ENIG) so I don't believe that it's a good fit for us.

I understand that it solders very nicely, though.

I used to make all the boards HASL, but now prefer Chemical tin in thickness >1µm

I does depend on the level of technology of the PCB. RoHS-HASL for basic products and Silver Immersion for a flat finish, are my preferred.

As a manufacturer, I prefer plated nickel gold, electroless nickel immersion gold, immersion silver and palladium. These surface finishes are the best options to replace leaded surface finishes. These surface finishes can withstand higher temperatures and give out consistent performance over a long period of time. My company Sierra Circuits has delivered lead-free and RoHS compliant boards from the last decade.

I think it might be the best choice for OEMs that only run one finish and practice JIT. (taking cost into account) For everyone else I think they will eventually run into trying to use them too long after they have been opened. But when you can run both sides within a week of getting the boards, they are good. Edit this reply was to Steve regarding OSP.

How to choose PCB finish? It depends your product application.
