Press fit parts help

You could check the data sheets/web sites from the manufacturers of the press-fit parts. They typically will identify the recommended tooling/equipment necessary to install their components.

Generally, pneumatic presses are suggested, with controllable amounts of force. If you're using a table-top, manually operated arbor press, the amount of force being used can't be regulated, or, most times, even determined. It seems likely that too much force is being used to install the component causing the measling.

Accuracy of the arbor press might be made better by tightening the adjustable gibs on the ram if any. If you can use support under the board have the ID of the support just slightly larger than the pins being pressed. Janesville Tool makes an accurate little arbor press, if you look at it make sure the throat is deep enough to reach all your pin locations.

Are you using specific tooling for each part, or just generic? If so it could be pushing down at an angle and slightly tearing the PCB. We use the same style press as you but make custom fixtures to fit each connector and hold each PCB tight.
