Hi , I provide machines to count SMT parts that come on reel , my customer wants to improve his counting method , he is having problems when delivering material to prodution floor , because the number on the reel (physical) is not the same as it is written on the label , the solution looks easy : change counting machine to those which detects missing parts on the reel pockets , by any chance do you know another method cheaper ? Thanks

Give him the whole reel and have him build until he runs out of parts and asks for more. Make him keep track of inventory. Your job is to give him a bad time about too much shrinkage.

I don't think empty pockets is the problem. The operator is probably given 5,000 parts when he needs 5,000 parts. Because of droppage he needs more than that.

I really doubt your solution would work. And if there are empty pockets, they should contact the supplier and scream bloody murder.

This happens on the counting area which it is into warehouse , we are looking for a poka yoke to avoid delivering reels with a wrong quantities , the question is : have you implemented any poka yoke in your warehouse ? how it works ? I could suggest to use the Versa Count II from Vtek Inc. which stops counting when detecting an empty pocket , but we want something cheaper than Versa Count. Thank you so much in advanced.

We have purchased a similar machine from Manncorp and have had good success. It does check for empty pockets.

Have you confirmed that? Have you seen empty pockets? Or are you taking someone's word for that? How many extra parts does the stockroom give to SMT to cover droppage?

Hello!

I think the point here to have a reliable counting system. No matter if it is given 5000 out of 5000 or 6000 out of 5000. What Jesus means is that there is a problem because the qty that the label says after the reel is counted doesn't match with physical qty. The counting system may have 2000 but there is only 500 physical.

I understand what he means. But has he confirmed that an unusual situation is what is really occurring, or is what happens at every other company happening there?

It is very common to have part droppage. Look at all the threads on the subject here. Empty pockets is an indication of another problem that should be addressed. If they are recieving reels with empty pockets then they should be raising bloody hell over it.(pardon my language.

Now I have seen mislabeled reels but that is because nobody updated the quantity on the reel. And I have seen empty pockets but because of the tape coming away from the pockets. Which is something that needs to be fixed not worked aroun.

Too many times I've seen problems where someone makes a wild guess and then that wild guess becomes treated as gospel.

Basically if Jesus has not seen the empty pockets for himself he should not believe in them. Does he even have a witness that has seen these alleged empty pockets? Or is it all speculation? He has given no indication that it is anything other than speculation. (which happens to need what he is selling to fix).
