When does the uneven surface occur? * Incoming * Reflow * Cleaning * Wave soldering * Some other process, where?

Hi Davef,

This photo taken on field returned board. Previously, we never saw such thing..Perhaps, this could be escapee to the field. Anyway, what is the potential root cause at each stage of the process?

Thanks, Sean

Sean,

Is this the only chip component that exhibits this condition? Only one location or only one part number? What are you using for chemistry? (OA, No Clean) if the parts do not look like this when they leave, I would send a sample of an unprocessed part, one that had been mounted and then one returned from the field with this condition to be analyzed for contamination. This would tell you: 1) raw parts have some degree of contamination- supplier issue 2) Parts have contamination after processing- internal issue 3) Parts are being contaminated after shipment-customer issue.

There are many parameters that need to be looked at. Process temps, chemistry, cleaning, etc. This becomed more focused if the problem applies to one part, one location or all chip components.

Please let us know how you are making out.

Thanks

Chris
