Good morning SMTNET FORUM!!! Its been a while since I have been on. Good to see people are out there still helping other people. I have a question... What is everyone using for Coating Dry Film thickness verification?

We are using micrometers. My supervisor asked me to look into other methods. I have found the Delfesko Eddy-Current gauges and the Ultra-Sonic gauges. Has anyone used these and how reliable are they? Is there any other technology or gauge manufacturer out there?

We are running 2 coating lines: Silicone(1-8mils)and Urethane Coating (2-6mils)

Thanks

I've used handheld ultrasonic gages on silicone in the 4-12 mil range. A coupling agent is needed between the transducer and the material - we used DI water vs. the supplied gel. Fairly straightforward, setup is done off a reference thickness of material and verified over the expected working range for your process and over the expected substrate. A little pricey, but fast and easy. We could download the results to a file if needed or attach to a PC.

How consistent are these? Are you finding yourself remeasuring? Have you used this device in any MSEs?

Thanks

It read to .0001 and was repeatable to +/- .0005. As the SR coating got thicker, it was more sensitive to pressure since the transducer (ours was a 1/8" dia.) would press into the coating. You might request a demo from a vendor and see if it is a fit for your process.
