Thermal Profiling Frequency System

How many times do you measure your oven's profile? I have seen companies running a thermal profile prior to every run of their products into the oven. But if you are in a low to medium volume - high mix category what is the best frequency of measurement for each product?

I am looking at the angle of having a thermal profile validity period and expiration date which is 3 months for every product - this is based on the downtime and data we collected.

how do you do yours?

thanks and regards,

Armynski,

You should do a Cpk study to baseline how capable your ovens are. Then based on Cpk, determine the frequency.

We use a "gold" board to verify the performance of the oven. We chose a scrap board, ran it thru a known good profile and saved the results. We have permanently attached the thermocouples to the board so there is no variance as to where you place the thermocouples. We run it through the oven once a month and compare the profile to the prior month. Good or Bad, it has worked well for us.

With our last two ovens (Heller and now BTU) spanning the past 7 or 8 years I did it once a month and have never seen any issues. Reflow ovens these days with PID controllers know exactly what they are doing inside well before you run a profiler through it to verify that what the software is telling you is true. I recently switched to doing it quarterly and even that is only to make the auditors of the world feel warm and fuzzy inside!

JDumont is right on the money. With today's modern reflow ovens and closed-loop feedback systems that alert you when something's out-of-whack, I have yet to find an out-of-tolerance condition on a known-good profile.

....but try to tell that to an ISO/AS9100/Mil/Avionics type customer... LOL
