Reflow Oven & Surface Mount Machine Energy Consumption | 21 January, 2008

Hi all,

I need some one to give me a ballpark figure on yearly energy consumption of a reflow oven and a pick & place machine. I know it will vary greatly depending on various factors, but I just need some realistic figures. Say for a two shift operation with one reflow oven and one SMT machine. Running lead-free temps.

THANKS!!!, B

Calculate numbers according to your situation, as follows: Cost = Cost per kilowatt hour x [Amps x volts x hours of operation 1000]

Cost per kilowatt hour: What we need to do to figure out the total cost is get out our electric bill. Look on the bill where it states the kilowatt or kwh. You'll find some numbers something like this: 280kwh @ .0906 or .1007. This number will be different throughout the country since electric costs vary. The ".1007" means $0.10 per khr.

Amps & volts: Are from the equipment supplier's description of your machine. Some machine suppliers list average power consumption. That could be used in place of the "amps x volts" product. Watch your units here. The equation above asumes this product is either amps times volts or watts.

Hours of operation: Number of hours you plan to operate the equipment.

The P&P machine uses very modest power when idling. It draws burst of power when accelerating the gantry. So, the yearly power consumption is going to be a LOT less than nameplate figures. If it is largely air-driven, then you have to factor in the air compressor power demand.

Now, the ovens will use a lot closer to nameplate power whenever they are at temperature. I think that will probably dwarf the power demand of the P&P.

Not quite correct Jon. Ovens will use roughly 1/2 their rated power consumption at temp. but will draw their rated max. power at startup.

Best to throw an amp clamp on it at diffrent times and then average it out with the formula they gave you!
