Quad 4c pretending to place components | 22 September, 2006

Hello all,

Finally ready to run my first 14 up array and the machine picks up the part moves to the placement location, them moves to home and drops the part. The Z axis never moves.

I do get a "run error 1" at about the 4th placement (if it was actually putting it on the board) when the head is at home. This is just after it does a laser align on something. I guess the nozzle. The error suggests either a pickup wasn't taught or was over 127 neither of which is true.

Thanks, Larry

It sounds like it's just failing the laser align step. Try changing the align type for the part to "2" and see if it places it.

If it's failing the laser align and you have valid part dimensions I can't help much but you might consider opening up the tolerances there for starters if you haven't already. Z height is usually where I need adjustments if I'm having problems.

Hi larry, don't know if you resolved your problem but if machine is picking part three times, rejecting all three but places number fourth your nozzle pickup is misaligned very slightly. During the first three pickups the nozzle is finally seating itself and at the end of the third try the quad align is homing you z- height again. Try realigning your nozzle location for that particular nozzle. Also use a q-tip and put alittle o-ring grease in all six of your nozzles z height should be around 200 +- if you do a funtion 30

You might also have a dirty/sticky Z-rod resulting in the same problem, although ordinarily you'll see a lot of missed pickups as well.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It seems that the main problem was that the extent data wasn't set up right in Central Controller. I deleted it from the Pickup and Place files and it started placing things without correction. I only had about 11 arrays to pupulate and had to get them done. We manually aligned the parts afterwards.

Oh, I should add that doing a Function 31 to manually check alignment on the parts works fine.

I hope that you don't miss that data later on. My suggestion of changing align type to "2" (in the extent data) eliminates the alignment step but leaves the data intact.

That's funny... I thought that the Quads were DESIGNED to PRETEND TO PLACE PARTS..... you mean, you actually gone one to work? I'm impressed.

You'd be surprised what you can overcome with some smarts, some mechanical aptitude, and daily medication.

Brad,

Thanks for the info. Now that I have my align data set correctly I'm having this problem. I've greased and realigned until I'm blue in the face. If I do a nozzle change then a function 30, press the nozzle on with my finger and do a function 30 again I see at most 2 mils difference in height on all 3 (1 changer) of the nozzles. I'm using a Z height that almost fully compresses the Z-Rod during the nozzle change. It's almost as if the first time the machine calibrates the Z height it doesn't get it right. I wish there was a way to force it in the sequence program.

If its only moving 2 mils the nozzle is seated correctly.
