I am wondering what skills operators need to run an smd line itself. At our company they know how the pick&place machine works (refill/ changover), but if there is a problem with wrong placed components they don't known what to do.

Our managmentteam thinks that it is an easy job and thinks that training has no improvement.

Most importand question: What training do operators at your company have.

IPC610 training to help verify issues that might arise. Also, the opeators need to know part numbers and descriptions because that should be common knowledge when running a SMT line. Plus, with your comment "At our company they know how the pick&place machine works (refill/ changover), but if there is a problem with wrong placed components they don't known what to do." it sounds to me someone is passing the buck and don't want responsibility for loading a wrong part.

We have a system where when we set up the line to run a job before the first part is placed an auditor verifies we have all the correct parts loaded on the machines in thier correct locations. We then run a first article. The board is inspected to insure all the correct parts are in the correct places and it meets or exceeds customers standards. We then complete the one board through all the processes using the same procedure. We then test the board to insure it works. Once all those things happen we then start up the line and build the rest of the assemblies. During the run if a reel is emptied and must be spliced on or replaced the operator that changed the part fills out a document that describes the part and feeder location changed and signs it. A second operator must then check that it is correct and also sign the paper. Make your process do the work of making your products correct! My company had .17% (yes less than 2 tenths of a percent) return rate last year.

Our lines have operators on all shifts capable of doing programming start-to-finish and can deal with almost any program related problem. We are high mix, low volume. Our builds are sometimes one of a kind with qauntities of 20 or 30. We empower and train our operators to the highest level they are capable of in this high mix, low volume setting. With that comes the need for very skilled, competent operators. We pay them accordingly. We can't afford the time or money it takes to have engineers in control of every change to a machine.

Any comments from the high volume shops???
