Conformal Coating High Power Electronics PCBs | 3 July, 2019

Hello All,

Just wondering if some viewers on the forum have experience with conformal coating of PCBs for high power electronics. High power in this case meaning up to 800v. Any comments with regards differences seen from standard 12/24v electronic PCBs. Are there some coating which are better for high voltages than others. Are things such as delamination & cracking more pronounced at higher voltages. All information appreciated

IPC-HDBK-830A - Guidelines for Design, Selection and Application of Conformal Coatings, 5.4.1 High Voltage (HV)/High Current (HC) will give you a good starting point.

If you don't have 830A, rumor has it that some people can find it here: https://dowservice.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/355707/0/filename/IPC-HDBK-830A+Guidelines+for+Design+of+Conformal+Coatings.pdf

To perform conformal coating of PCBs in high power electronics applications follow IPC-A-600F and IPC-CC-830B conformal coating standards. This standard enlists several performance criteria. Additionally, this standard is considered as a good reference point to measure coating defects. These conformal defects may arise due to the poor surface preparation, coverage and cure. This standard can be a critical factor to determine successful coating and long-term reliability of PCBs. This IPC standard will further allow the operator to measure and analyze the coating application performance. This standard is applicable to both manual and automated conformal coating. A conformal coating inspection system will carry out inspection of PCB or manually performed under white and UVA light.
