Water-Based Flux Line Covers Full Range of Applications

Feb 17, 2003

A Circuits Assembly News Item

Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials is introducing a new line of water-based fluxes for wave soldering processes that will allow electronics manufacturers to meet government environmental standards and individual company policies, while satisfying production requirements. The four new ALPHA EF Series flux products are: ALPHA EF-2202, ALPHA EF-3001, ALPHA EF-3215 and ALPHA EF-4102.

Beta testing for EF-2202 showed that ten out of ten sites experienced excellent board cosmetics and micro solder ball results with no compromise in soldering performance or electrical reliability. The other three fluxes in the series also performed well in their Beta test challenges.

"The flux family has been designed to meet varied and specialized wave soldering needs for applications such as telecom, automotive and consumer products, in both original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and contract manufacturing settings," said Mike Marczi, Global Product Manager, Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials. "The new series will significantly reduce or eliminate VOC emissions, and deliver effective flux action with a rosin content of 10 percent or less. As for future process considerations, the transition from tin/lead to lead-free processing will be seamless in terms of flux requirements because EF Series fluxes have been formulated to work effectively in both settings. Cookson is committed to supporting the market with detailed information on product properties, including the impact of flux chemistries on wave soldering effectiveness and process flexibility, as well as environmental impacts.

Cookson supplies a full line of advanced flux formulations including VOC-free no-clean, solvent-based no-clean, water-soluble and QPL-approved products.
