Pulse Offers Highest Power Density SMT Planar Transformer

Jan 24, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Jan 23, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Pulse, a Technitrol (NYSE:TNL) Company, announced a new series of surface mount (SMT) planar transformers for high-density isolated DC-to-DC modules and discrete power supplies for use in telecom, datacom and industrial control applications. The new series is designed to meet operational insulation, 1500 volts DC isolation and is optimized for frequencies between 200-500 kHz. These transformers feature excellent AC resistance performance, low leakage inductance and a height of only 0.26 inches, while offering the highest power density available in today's market, 500 watts per cubic inch.

The first two transformers in the series are designed for a forward converter DC-to-DC topology operating from a wide-range telecom input voltage of 36 to 72 volts. Part no. PA0457 provides a regulated output of 67 watts (3.3-volt 20-amp), while PA0458 yields 75 watts (5.0-volt / 15-amp). Other turns ratios can be made available for differing output voltages. Both transformers' SMT packages are compatible with all contemporary pick-and-place processes.

Technical Information

Turns ratios are 12:2 for part number PA0457 with a power rating of 67 watts and 12:3 for part number PA0458 with a power rating of 75 watts. Primary inductance is rated at a minimum 220 micro henries. The primary direct current rating (DCR) is rated at 108 milliohms, the primary auxiliary at 200 milliohms and the secondary at 1.3 or 3.0 milliohms, dependent on model number. An extended operating temperature range of -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius ensures product stability with minimum drift in a wide range of environmental conditions.

Pricing and Availability

The new series is available in trays and tape-and-reel packaging, with prices starting at $3.15 for quantities of 100,000 for model PA0457 and $3.30 for quantities of 100,000 for model PA0458. Lead-time is four to six weeks. Volume discounts are available. Contact Pulse directly for samples. For further information on part number PA0457 and PA0458 please refer to data sheet P570 http://www.pulseeng.com/pdf/P570.pdf on the Pulse Web site.
