Conductive Adhesive Dispensing, Process Considerations

Dispensing conductive adhesives in an automated factory environment creates some special challenges. A robust production process starts with understanding the adhesives in their fluid state and which important parameters must be controlled. Developing this understanding requires experience with a large number of materials and valves over time. Common uses of conductive adhesives in surface mount applications, die attach applications, and gasketing are addressed. As vendors of dispensing equipment, the authors see a constant stream of such applications. Dispensing requirements, techniques, and equipment resulting from this experience are discussed. Guidelines for optimizing quality and speed are given.

Die Attach Dispensing Methods

Die attach material selection and process implementation play crucial roles in any microelectronic assembly. The chosen attach methods ultimately affect die stress, functionality, thermal management, and reliability of the assembly. Die attach applications are designed to optimize mechanical attachment of the die to the substrate, to create a thermal path from the die to the substrate, and to create an electrical path for a ground plane connection. Some of the more commonly used die attach materials in the microelectronics industry today are epoxies,polyimides, thermoplastics, silicones, solders, and special low outgassing, low stress, anisotropic adhesives.

Considerations in Dispensing Conformal Coatings

Conformal coating is a material that is applied to electronic products or assemblies to protect them from solvents, moisture, dust or other contaminants that may cause harm. Coating also prevents dendrite growth, which may result in product failure. This paper will discuss the variables that affect the application of conformal coatings, and review in detail those variables that impact the process of selective coating of printed circuit boards.

Automated Fluid Dispensing for Epoxy

Robotics for automated fluid dispensing have the ability to apply a variety of materials including epoxy, silicone, and acrylic coatings. These materials are extensively used in today's high-speed fluid dispensers for the electronics industry.

Whether a dispenser is applying epoxy or another material, the central concept for applying any form of material remains the same. Specific points of an item being dispensed onto are programmed into the dispensing system. The automated fluid dispensers software interprets the programmed information and keeps the travel path in memory. A robotic arm moves fluid dispensing nozzles along this travel path and applies epoxy onto the surface of the item with precise accuracy. Machine speed can be adjusted to emit varying amounts of epoxy. The overall application process is auto-regulating and will not be disrupted.

Dispensing Thermally Conductive Materials

Electronic vehicles, devices and components must not overheat, otherwise they may fail to operate correctly. Thermal management is a major technical challenge as components are getting smaller, power densities are increasing and demands on robustness and reliability are becoming more stringent. To prevent power losses or defects resulting from overheating, liquid thermal interface materials (TIMs) are being increasingly used to dissipate their heat. This White Paper discusses the aspects that need to be taken into account when dispensing these mostly highly viscous, highly abrasive materials and why in many cases they are better alternatives to pads, tapes and foils.

Contact System CS400E Bin Programming Help -- We have a Contact System CS400E with a Rotary Bin model CS201 with 90 bins and we're sort of new to programming it and are wondering how we can program the bins so that we can assign a part number to a bin. What happens now is it always goes to the first bin no matter what job we load using a .DNL file. In order to program each board, we use Unisoft ProntoPLACE to identify the part locations, assembly sequence, etc. The only issue is that there isn't a clear place to define the bin that would like to be used. I thought that the sequence and bin location might be linked, but after arbitrarily increasing all of the sequence numbers, bin 1 was still the first one chosen. Even after exploring the different menus within the CS400E, there wasn't an obvious place to define the bins. So is there a way to offset start location so that it starts at a different bin number and sequences up from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
