Summary
This Nepcon East / Electro show seemed busier and felt far more positive than last year, we saw a good 'rounding' of product ranges by most of the manufacturers as well as some interesting new developments. The Mydata & Juki lines showed their competive nature and was certainly generating a lot of buzz.
This years trends
This year, with the lead free race in full gear, we saw the implementation process of a
majority of the manufacturers in their current as well as future plans. New product was
on display and plenty of discussions were taking place around this and the ROHS
compliance requirements.
The SMTA will be offering a Symposia June 7 in San Diego, CA and on July 13 in Boston, MA for OEM, EMS, ODM, and supplier companies to learn leading methodologies, strategies, and tools for design for environment, and they are encouraged to bring a product sample for hands-on disassembly experience. There will also be
courses on RoHS/WEEE compliance at AT Expo in Chicago Sept 24-28, 2006.
Walking the Trade Show Floor
I walked the trade show floor a few times during the show and learned about many exciting new technologies. For instance, the booth accross from us featured ASC International's new VM400 which is their latest development in True 3D measurement technology.
This product includes integration of a larger Field of View (FOV), while still retaining .07 mil resolution therefore allowing operators to measure everything from 0201's and micro-BGA's to very large applications. Steve Arneson, whom I spoke with seemed to be happy with the show, "The quality of the traffic and the number of attendees was above and beyond what I expected!"
On day 2 while walking down isle 3000 I met an old friend, Steve Clark, President of Fortunetech Inc. We chatted for a while about the state of the used equipment industry. As an attendee he was very pleased, "I've walked the Nepcon East trade shows in the recent years and I got more leads from this one then any of the previous shows!" This comment seemed to echo the comments we heard both from attendees and exhibitors.
After the show was over and as I gathered my notes, I came to this conclusion about Nepcon East 2006: Everyone everyone heard many comments that the show was successful and were pleased with the
reception. We met many old friends, made as many new ones and had the opportunity to discuss the Internet as a resource to market a companies' products & services to a wide variety of interested parties.

BEST Instructors have put to video demonstrations of common hand soldering skills. These are not designed to be in place of live one on one training where repetitive skills and subsequent one on one feedback is given. Rather they are quick refreshers designed to be viewed if a specific skill has not been practiced in a while.
JEDEC and the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) today announced the availability of two documents intended to help manufacturers reduce the risk of tin whiskers in lead-free products. The first is JEDEC standard JESD201, "Environmental Acceptance Requirements for Tin Whisker Susceptibility of Tin and Tin Alloy Surface Finishes," and the second is a JEDEC/IPC joint publication, JP002, "Current Tin Whiskers Theory and Mitigation Practices Guideline."
Indium Corporations Research Chemist, Dr. Yan Liu will review her findings on the reliability of lead-free soldering in a presentation to be delivered at the SMTA/CAVE Harsh Environment Electronics Workshop in Indianapolis, IN, USA on July 19-20, 2006.
We have a 6 up panel with a 1206 part .082" from the board scoreline. After depanelization when we run the board through ICT it fails for a short at that location. We have visually inspected at high magnification for any cracks in the body and at the terminations but none are visable. When you put a volt ohm meter on it it shows a dead short (...) Has anyone else had issues like this?
I would like to take an informal poll on 0201 feeders. I am currently using Tyco machines and 0201 feeders for these machines have become impossible to find. I am hoping to get some feedback on other manufacturers feeders and try to modify them to fit my machines.I would like to get opinions on feeder accuracy, ease of loading components and durability of any feeder you may be using.
