Overview

Outsourcing of PCBA manufacturing has now become a common and established practice in nearly all business segments, especially for high-volume applications such as consumer, telecoms, industrial and automotive. The electronic board manufacturing market is dominated by large worldwide EMS suppliers with a global footprint and multi-site settlements seconded by a strong network of low/medium sized PCB assemblers acting in one or in a limited set of countries. This structure of the EMS supplier base allows servicing various business needs such as low-mix/high-volume vs. high-mix/low volume manufacturing, prototyping vs. serial production and local vs. global sourcing strategies.

Nevertheless, establishing an efficient and reliable partnership with distanced EMS suppliers remains a critical endeavor with a high potential for failures if not carefully managed. In the specific case of high-mix/low-volume Aerospace and Defense PCBA, the challenges are further complicated by technical risks induced by the large variability and complexity of the board designs, the related broad spectrum of requested manufacturing processes, the use of dedicated product requirements and acceptance criteria.

The presentation will describe an original de-risking approach introduced to secure the EMS process capabilities for the serial production of a wide range of complex high-end PCBA. The focus will be on the successful implementation of this approach relying on PCBA process qualifications and monitoring in India, where advanced technologies like 0201/0.4mm-pitch component assembly and BGA underfilling have been introduced.

About the Presenter

Sriranjani Sundareshan has been working with electronics for nearly 20 years and has been a Supplier Technical Performance Manager at Thales India since 2015. In her current role at Thales she set process standards, addresses stringent quality and technical requirements for Aerospace and Defense applications, and closely monitors suppliers through product and process qualifications. She started her career in Satellite control systems at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and has a post-graduation degree in Digital Electronics & Communication Systems (state rank). She has many contributions in high technology products, such as the “Multi-technology RFID Reader”, which won the best paper award in the National Conference on Microelectronics & Communication.
