John,

We tape (usually high temp tape) flex to a fixture (usually 0.090" piece of bare FR4). We make an outline on the fixture to get a rough location then use fiducials on the flex for alignment. Print, place, reflow, cool, remove flex. When the fixture is room temp it's ready for a new flex and repeat. Hardest part is coming up with the location for the screen manufacturer.

Thanks for info. I try to build small flex in panel, alignment is a issue, also the flatness. Do you use vacuum to hold the flex? Do you print in panel of single.

No vacuum. I use tape to hold the flex flat. Panels are hard. Some flexes I do 3 up some 1 up. Larger components that I can get a repeatable location of the flex are 3 up. 0805 and smaller are 1 up always.

I talked to a flex house once about getting the flex in the array still but this didn't work due to the high price they were going to charge to change their tooling for that flex. If your volume is high enough this might be an option.

We used durastone pallets, where you mill out the profile of the panel or board and it sits flat for printing. We secured them using 3M spray mount (for singled sided) and Kapton tape. Obviously helps to have bottom side heating in the oven as you will need to heat up the durastone as well as the flex.

Both printer & pick & place used fiducial correction (multiple single boards on one pallet were a sod for printing though, although the milled profile helped).

AOI wasn't best pleased with flex, but was OK on the higher volumes of panelised boards.
