Rework and repair system suggestions | 26 January, 2005

What system would you guys recommend as a good rework and repair system in the $10,000-$40,000 range or so? The company I work for is just starting to branch out into working with SMT components.

A few things first, what type of components are you going to be reworking? What are the PCBA sizes and thickness? How much rework are you going to do?

When you answer these you will know which machine to buy.

Some companies that manufacture rework equipment that I would recommend checking out: Air-Vac engineering > 40K most likely SRT > 40k most likely Weller Liester Hako Metcal

There is a bigger list of companies that I wouldn't give the time of day to.

For now, on this first board, we will be reworking components such as 0805 and 1210 size caps and resistors, along with SOT-23 and SC-70 size packages. We might eventually get into BGAs. This board will most likely be a double-sided board, probably 0.062" thick. The boards will be less than 10" square. We might eventually need to go slightly bigger with future boards. We will probably we doing a decent amount of rework at first, especially since these will be prototype boards.

We have been looking into Air-Vac and Pace. From Air-Vac we've been looking at the DRS20V, DRS19, and DRS24NC. From Pace we've been looking at the TF1500 and TF2500. What do you guys think about Pace? I'll check into some of the others you listed that I haven't already looked at. Some companies we already looked at but didn't think were too great, are A.P.E South, Focalspot (DEN-ON), PMT, and VJ Electronix. One other company that seemed decent was ERSA. What do you think about these companies?

For what you have right now I would recommend that you use soldering iron tips that are made for component removal. until you get BGAs I wouldn't worry a whole lot about the expensive rework equipment. I would use specialty tips and a heat gun with temp control for your requirements such as a liester or equivelant unit.

i agree with you on your supplier selections and opinions, I personally have never worked with the Ersa units but there is a lot of discussion about these units in the forum do a search for "Ersa", "rework", etc...

Based on the components mentioned, it sounds like you need a soldering station rather than a bga rework station. The equipment mentioned would allow you to rework fine pitch QFPs and BGAs. Reworking an sot-23 using one of those systems is inefficient to say the least. Kind of like using a Mack truck to kill a fly.

PS. Russ, regarding Wellers bga rework system . . . in comparison to others, a true POS.

I'd still like to know what you guys think about Pace. Maybe we'll look into their MBT-250-SDPT Repair System (http://www.paceworldwide.com/_ShowSystemDetails.asp?ProductGroupID=2∏uctID=26 ). Or maybe even a very low-end Rework station such as the TF 700. What do you think about these?

Well the powers that be actually want to go with a regular rework station, for future growth. I guess they plan on using BGAs sometime in the near future. We're also planning on using a D-Pak device in this first board. So now we're looking at the Air-Vac DRS24B and DRS19, as well as the first 2 Pace station I mentioned, the TF1500 and TF2500. What's your input on these stations and others in the same category?
