After testing and calibrating my CS400E machine, I turned the machine off and later turned it back on but found myself stuck in a boot screen. When the machine is powered on, the command prompt screen shows RPL-ROM-FFC count up from 1 to 50 or so and then it says, "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter." Normally whenever I would start the machine, it would spend a few moments in the command prompt boot screen before proceeding to the main menu. When I first set up the machine, I was instructed to boot up while holding a key down and it sent me to a separate startup menu. I don't know if I need to change a setting in this menu or not, but it's just an idea. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

If you're lucky, it's just a bad boot sector. You can take the drive out, hook it up to another computer and copy it before trying to fix anything. Then try to reinstall programs if you have them. If you're unlucky the hard drive died. You might be able to get an identical hard drive and swap the platter.

Thank you for your input. Do you know what might have caused this to happen? Just trying to prevent it from happening next time.

My background is in I.T. Here's what's likely the cause. It's old and worn out. Not much else to offer technical wise. Hard drives are mostly permanently sealed to keep dust out and have moving parts. Eventually they wear out. The way to prevent failures is to make backups. There's no feasible way to do preventative maintenance other than keeping it clear from dust and heat. Versatec might have spare parts. http://versatecsolutions.com/csi_contact.html

The first thing we do with all machines we buy is back them up. First we backup the calibration info, then we remove the hard drive and image it to our server. If the hdd dies, we can restore it to a new one. Look on eBay for new-old stock on the hard drive or a compatible one. Get a hard drive to USB adapter cable or install the drive in another PC to image it.
