Hello folks,

is there a standard you follow for maximum cleaning cycles? We are debating how many times we should clean a board for misprints on the second manufacturing side? First side is already assembled and I wonder how many times we can safely clean this panel?

The answer to this lies within the datasheets of the components on the board. Each component has its own specs as far as number of heat cycles, time at reflow, peak temperature, whether it can be washed, etc.

You do not need to be as thorough on the passive components but many of the active and more complex components will have more stringent guidelines. If you want to be sure you are not damaging components on the board, you will want to review the BOM and check datasheets.

I agree with Mainteneer on this. Depending on the active components, I would check the datasheets of them. Particular groups of components to pay attention to: microphones, microprocessors, transformers, relays, switches. Washing may be in some cases forbidden, but also pay attention to the drying process. Consider baking after wash in some cases.

Any components which have poor or no sealing can be affected by the presence of water/liquid inside them. Surely the components manufacturer can advise on the cleaning process, if it is of utmost importance.

Guys, it is a wash process assembly, so everything on the BOM can go to wash. The question is more around number of cycles limitation/rule.

Understood, but I do not think you will find anyone who gives a standardized rule across all components.

Different components will have different restrictions. At a minimum you need to determine what is the most sensitive component on your BOM and act according to its data sheet.

Put together a DOE and wash assemblies until you see soldering issues on the second side?

That's where it is going.
