Hello colleagues,

I appeal to your expertise in this matter that has taken me by surprise. A week ago it was decided to change the solder brand for the wave machine, (only the brand, the alloy is the same). The pot was emptied and filled with the new solder. After this, when starting the operation of the machine we noticed that some bubbles appeared in the solder pot, something that caught my attention as it had not happened before.

At first I thought that they could be gases or moisture that were trapped during the emptying and filling of the pot. I have looked for information about the possible causes but I have had no luck, has anyone had the same thing happen to them?

Thanks!

Are these molten solder bubbles, or another substance "foaming" up on the surface?

Hi, I think they are a bit of both. When they pop the bubbles something like a foam is generated.

In a previous lifetime, we had a selective solder machine where I would see solder splashes in the roof of it. I thought someone might have been putting the solder extremely high. But when it was melting there would be bubbles that burst. The manufacturer thought that maybe the heaters on one side weren't working and the solder on that side was falling over when the rest melted. I really really doubt that. I think that maybe the solder would shrink when it froze and somehow create an air bubble that would expand when the solder melted. But I don't see how that can happen but it is the only thing that I could think of.

I'm sure this isn't the same situation, but we did have a selective solder machine with crazy dross and solder ball build up. Turns out the operator switched the low pressure nitrogen line used for solder level and the high pressure nitrogen line for inerting the wave. So it was basically like blowing bubbles in chocolate milk.

In this case nitrogen is not used but thanks for your contribution!
