Nitrogen supply for new solder wave spray fluxer. | 6 March, 2023

We recently installed a new solder wave machine, The spray fluxer has a pressurized tank and because we use an alcohol based flux, the spray fluxer system must be fed with nitrogen. Anyone has infos on what installation is prefered to supply this machine with nitrogen?

We use Nitrogen to inert the Selective Solder, as well as spray flux. We have Onsite Nitrogen Generators.

any advantages over other nitrogen systems, like cost, maintenance, installation, etc?

Prior to the Generators, we bought tanks of N2. As long as you have an air compressor that can supply the generator, it's pretty much maintenance free. You change filters every year. In almost 15 years, other than changing filters, we've had to replace one valve inside the cabinet that started leaking. We do have a large dryer/ filter system on the compressors due to other equipment in the plant, so I imagine that we are supplying much CLEANER air than is required. In fact when we change those filters, it's hard to tell them from the new one. Installation is just setting the cabinet in place (minimum distance from the wall), hooking up the air supply and the holding tank, and running lines to your machine.

What pressure does your fluxer require?

fluxer requires normal shop pressure, around 100psi. Thanks for the infos, very useful.

The onsite generator drops approx. 30psi from the input. We feed ours 110psi and end up around 80psi in the tank, which we regulate to 65psi for the machines.

Sounds right, our actual pressure in the system is 120psi, the regulated to 100 in the machines.

What purity? To get 99.999% pure you will need dewers of liquid nitrogen or a two stage system. (and a dewer will last about a month and a half even if you don't use it as it outgasses.) But you can get reasonable purity with a wall mounted single stage passive filter. I'm not sure what purity we got but it was good enough for the selective solder machine.

Here we have a two stage generator that generates higher purity with less air.

For a fluxer you can probably be ok with whatever purity that garages use to put nitrogen in tires.

we don't have a nitrogen generator installed yet. The solder wave supplier recommends 99.99%. we hare received several submissions for nitrogen generators that meet the requirements.

Agreed. If it's just a means of propulsion/ atomization the purity probably isn't too critical.

For fun ask the sales guy where they came up with that number. Or even the reasoning for using nitrogen. Don't expect quality answers.
