Preference on selective soldering brands? Used gear life? | 23 January, 2023

I'm looking at some Pillarhouse and Juki machines used. Does anyone have a strong preference on selective soldering brands? What's the life time on machine? Is buying a 10 year old machine a waste of time? What are you doing for nitrogen? I'm currently soldering connectors by hand and looking for something faster. Lead free.

Try to stay away from this process in general. I have worked with different brands and all of them have some pros and cons.It is a lot to maintain and I am not sure if it will be faster. Repeatability of these machines is very hard to sustain. You should have someone really capable to constantly babysit them.

Have you looked at simple solder fountains? If it is just simple connectors that might be all you need. Or maybe a small wave solder machine?

Emtimov, what are you using instead? Hand soldering? Is the repeatability due to lacking bottom side fiducials or is the process just inconsistent?

We've got a few connectors, something like 20 jacks with 3 pins each on some of our products. Our main product only has 2 though, and a few through hole caps.

I have been involved with our Selective Soldering process for 15 years or more. Using ACE Protech machines and now a Juki. Our first ACE machine replaced 4 hand solder operators easily, allowing them to work on other projects. The machine isn't "set it and forget it", but it certainly doesn't need "babby-sat". As long as you write a good program, it mostly just needs set up properly at the beginning, and spot checked throughout the run. As far as used machines, that depends on how well they were cared for and cleaned. If you don't clean the machine daily, you can ruin it pretty quick.

What about nitrogen purity? Erza won't say anything other than you need 99.999% pure nitrogen. We are looking at another company that says the same.

At a previous place we switched from dewers of liquid nitrogen to a single pass filter. I could see the difference in the surface of the wave but the machine still was ok soldering.

We have only had our Juki about 6 months, but it seems to be a great machine so far.

For nitrogen, we have a couple generators. Minimum purity is Tin/Lead = 99.99% RoHS = 99.995%

Of course five-9s is better. I do notice a difference in the LEAD FREE when we start up Monday morning before the nitrogen tanks get cycled a bit and the purity readings are a little higher. One of our N2 Gens gets below 5ppm and the other gets to about 20ppm once they get running. We mix the outputs into a holding tank that feeds the machines.

I'm now looking at Juki / Inertec and Ebso. I can get a used Ubso locally which would be very easy to deal with and they are also the dealer for Inertec / Juki. They will be around the same place but the Ebso will be refurbished and come with some warranty.
